Apert Syndrome Essay Apert Syndrome (AKA Alport syndrome) is a genetic defect which can be inherited from a parent who has Apert or a fresh mutation. It falls under the broad classification of craniofacial/limb anomalies. Approximately 1 per 160,000 to 200,000 live births inherit it. Some symptoms that Apert sufferers have are various heart defects, ear infections, severe acne, increased incidence of eye injuries, and many more. The skull is prematurely fused and unable to grow normally, and the fingers and toes are fused together in varying degrees. If your child gets Apert Syndrome they may have many physical defects as well as a few other problems such as slower learning, a cleft palate, vision problems, and problems with acne during puberty. I dont think Apert Syndrome children die, expecially because you can pass Apert through genetics. A child with Apert Syndrome could live a pretty normal life. The mutation which causes Apert Syndrome is found on chromosome number 10 called Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 2 (FGFR2). You have two copies of this gene, one from the mother, one from the father, which is composed of a string of about 2000 of the chemical building blocks that make up the genetic material called DNA. When Apert Syndrome occurs, just one particular building block in one of these two gene copies has been exchanged for another. The other gene is entirely normal. The one tiny change in FGFR2 results in the physical features of Apert Syndrome. There is no link between anything the mother does or doesnt do during her pregnancy to cause Apert. Doctors believe Apert Syndrome occurs when a gene mutates early in the pregnancy. The chances of having a second child with Apert are almost non-existent. However if one parent has Apert Syndrome there is a 50% chance that their child will also have Apert Syndrome. And studies have shown that Apert occurs more often to babies with older fathers. The only treatment for Apert Syndrome right now is a surgery to correct the skull, mid-face, and palate. The surgery is done after an evaluation by a multispecialty cranio-facial team at a childrens medical center. From my research I have come to believe that no gene therapy is being attempted. The soft clicks of camera caught my attention as I transferred my gaze at the crowd of people I had come with. Since the park is vast, and I did not know which part of it has the best view, I signed up for tour trip with Flagstaff, Charter and Tours. I was lucky enough to get the last ticket. We first decided to explore the South Rim as it was the most accessible part of the park and is opened all year through. Presently, we all were standing at 7000 ft above sea level. Peeking down the last barriers of rock, we could see the deep inner gorge of the Colorado River, its blueness a sharp contrast to the canyons orange walls. On the other side of the river, the North Rim stood at a towering height of about 8000 ft above sea level. The wild burrow and the big horned sheep moved about gracefully, their hovering over the land noses were looking for something to eat. As I let my gaze wander, I spotted a mule walking towards which I could only assume was the great Colorado River. Within seconds, I found myself dipping my hands into the cool water. I collected some water in my hands and sprinkled it on my face. It was pure bliss. The water felt so silky against my skin and a trickle of water somehow made its way into my mouth. Such sweetness, I had never tasted in any water before. I could not help but spend a few minutes relishing and enjoying its delightful taste. Afternoon flew by quickly with me taking as many pictures as possible. We were promised a sky walk over the Grand Canyon in the evening, and I just could not wait for it. That time eventually came, and I felt like heaven walking over the glass the multicolored view of the canyon shimmering below in the shades of evening. One moment, the walls seemed to blend with the sunset, the orange gleaming brightly. A slow cloud loomed its way over my head and, the next moment, the view seemed so mysterious, like if it was hiding some secret. Western Europe was nearly a century into the High Middle Age period when Pope Urban II called the first crusade at the Council of Clermont in 1095. This was the time of the medieval renaissance with an explosion of invention and advancement in invention, technology, culture and commercial pursuits. Painting, dress, and literature developed and were influenced on a local and regional basis. The primary influence the crusaders took with them to the Levant was architectural. Two architectural styles emerged in Western Europe during the time of the crusades – Romanesque from approximately the 11th to late 12th century, and Gothic from the 12th century to well pa st the end of the last crusade. These two styles were used in church design and construction. William the Conqueror, ultimately seizing England in 1066, helped to usher in another form (not style) of architecture that would change the landscape of medieval Europe – castles. With Romanesque architecture being in place by 1095 and Gothic soon to follow, the influence of Western European structural design and castles was set to follow them to the Holy Land, and they would bring back certain architectural influences as well as manuscript elements that would contribute to an already-growing renaissance. Church building in the Holy Land must be addressed both before and after the arrival of the Crusaders. Many of the Soldiers who fought at the battle of Iwo Jima lost their lives on the island. In fact, one soldier said that out of the Seven of the Easy Company soldiers that went in only he, Captain Dave Severance, made it out alive. What was the purpose of this battle? The battle of Iwo Jima was fought between the United States and the Empire of Japan. The invasion of the U.S, otherwise known as "Operation Detachment", happened because of the U.S. wanting to take over the airfield in Iwo Jima. With this airfield the Japanese provided a base for escort planes on their raids with the B29s. Iwo Jima's location was crucial to the United States because it was between Tokyo and the American bomber bases in the Marianas. This was yet another reason why they sparked the battle of Iwo Jima. The Commander of Iwo Jima was General Kuribayashi. He was known throughout Japan as "a genius". His strategy was unique because the Japanese fought the entire battle from underneath the ground. They dug 1,500 rooms through rock which were connected through 16 miles of tunnels. The Japanese also did not plan on surviving. In fact, they found that if they died during battle, it was an honor towards Japan. Trained in the extremely demanding samurai tradition, the Japanese were expected to fight to the last man. And their commander was expected to kill himself, rather than be captured. Kuribayashi had told his troops that each man had to kill at least ten Americans before he went down himself. And at the beginning of the battle, his men were actually killin... ...e island of Iwo Jima. About 6800 U. S. personnel lost their lives in seizing the island from the Japanese; Japanese losses were estimated at more than 21,000. Before the actual invasion on February 19, the island was subjected to air and sea bombing for three months.
